Fourth of July Fireworks Safety

Man lighting a firework When lighting fireworks this year, make sure to stay safe and enjoy the show!

Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of independence and freedom!

However, fireworks are also associated with pain in some cases. According to the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), around 180 people go to the emergency room each year around the Fourth of July for fireworks related injuries and over 44 percent of them were burns.

Although they are a wonderful way to celebrate special occasions fireworks pose certain risks, and safety procedures need to be followed to ensure a safe night.

Here are some tips from the CPSC to avoid any unwanted injuries this year!

  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper. This is often a sign that they were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Always have water handy in case of an emergency.
  • Aim the Fireworks away from flammable material and people.
  • Never extend body parts over the device
  • Never relight a 'dud' fire work.
  • Never leave children unsupervised around fireworks. Even sparklers can burn at a temperature of 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.

Celebrate safely this season and remember you can always count on SERVPRO of West Erie County! We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! If you have any questions about firework safety or need help with fire restoration – give us a call! (814) 806 – 1987
